A new updated version has been released for the 5.8.14 series after a week which makes the branch as stable on the kernel.org.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to install the latest version of Kernel 5.8.14 On Ubuntu 20.04 LTS / 18.04 and LinuxMint 20.
The latest stable version of Kernel is 5.8.14 and it released on 7th October 2020
Installation steps
The below commands will work on Debian based systems.
Step 1: Download the deb files directly using wget , copy the below commands and paste it into terminal one by one according to your CPU architecture
For 64 bit systems
wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8.14/amd64/linux-headers-5.8.14-050814-generic_5.8.14-050814.202010070730_amd64.deb
wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8.14/amd64/linux-headers-5.8.14-050814_5.8.14-050814.202010070730_all.deb
wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8.14/amd64/linux-modules-5.8.14-050814-generic_5.8.14-050814.202010070730_amd64.deb
wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8.14/amd64/linux-image-unsigned-5.8.14-050814-generic_5.8.14-050814.202010070730_amd64.deb
Step 2: After successful downloading install it
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Step 3: Verify installed Version
After successful installation reboot the system, Your new kernel will be installed and set as default, for checking use uname command
uname -r
Removing Kernel 5.8.14
For removing the Kernel 5.8.14 run the below command in a terminal or use the synaptic package manager
sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-5.8.14-* linux-image-5.8.14-*
